Main challenge:

The main challenge that was addressed in the described situation is the lack of peaceful coexistence between Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots in the community. The actions taken aimed to bridge the gap between the two communities by utilizing technology and research methodology education.

Through different actions, the school hoped to promote mutual understanding, collaboration, and harmony between these two communities. In order to achieve the aforementioned goal, upgrading the school equipment and providing access to technology, to give students the opportunity to develop their digital skills and engage in research on peaceful coexistence was essential. This addressed the challenge of limited resources and outdated equipment that could hinder their ability to explore and understand the perspectives of both communities.

Moreover, teacher training programs focusing on integrating technology in teaching aiming to equip educators with the necessary knowledge and skills to guide students in their research and foster an inclusive and tolerant learning environment were also needed to address the challenge of limited awareness and competence among teachers in utilizing technology for educational purposes.

Action and initiatives:

The challenge was addressed through several key actions and initiatives undertaken by the principal and other stakeholders. Here is how the challenge was overcome and the stakeholders' participation:

Upgrading school equipment: The principal collaborated with the Pedagogical Institute and other organizations to upgrade the school's equipment, including providing new computers, tablets, and updated software. This action allowed students to have access to modern technological tools necessary for their research and digital skills development. The involvement of the Pedagogical Institute and other organizations demonstrates the collaborative effort to improve the learning environment and support the project's goals.

Teacher training: The principal organized professional development programs for teachers, focusing on integrating technology into teaching practices. By enhancing teachers' knowledge and skills in utilizing technology, they were better equipped to guide and encourage students in their research on peaceful coexistence. The participation of teachers in these training programs shows their commitment to implementing innovative teaching methods and fostering an inclusive learning environment.

Creation of research projects: Students utilized technology to conduct research on peaceful coexistence in their village. They used the internet to gather information, conducted interviews with individuals from both communities, and created presentations to showcase their findings. The principal's support for these activities, as well as the encouragement of dissemination within the community, demonstrates a commitment to empowering students and promoting dialogue and understanding between Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots. Collaboration with Directors of Primary Education further extends the reach and impact of the project within the educational community.

Application development: Students were given the opportunity to develop games and applications based on their research findings. By using technology to create maps, digital games, and applications that promote learning and awareness about peaceful coexistence, students actively engaged with the subject matter and contributed to raising awareness in the community. The involvement of students in application development demonstrates their active participation and creativity in addressing the challenge of peaceful coexistence.

Main change/improvement/impact:

The implementation of the identified solutions as good practices in promoting peaceful coexistence through technology in research methodology education has brought about several changes and improvements. Here are the main changes and their impact on various aspects:

Enhanced access to technological tools: The upgrading of school equipment, including new computers, tablets, and updated software, has provided students with improved access to technology. This change has allowed them to develop their digital skills and engage in research activities using technology as a tool. The increased access to technological tools has expanded learning opportunities and enabled students to explore new ways of acquiring knowledge and conducting research. Furthermore, the use of specific tools such as Book Creator and Story Maps has revealed new possibilities and offered an additional level of creativity and interaction. Students were able to utilize Book Creator to craft digital books representing the findings of their research, including text, images, and multimedia. This tool facilitated the expression of their ideas in a creative manner while simultaneously enhancing their technological skills. Moreover, Story Maps allowed students to create digital maps that highlighted significant locations and events related to peaceful coexistence. The visualization of information using a geographic framework added a new dimension to the understanding of the topic and helped students connect theory with practice.

Integration of technology in teaching practices: Through the professional development programs organized by the principal, teachers have acquired further knowledge and skills in incorporating technology into their lessons. This integration of technology in teaching practices has transformed the way teachers deliver content and engage students. It has opened up new possibilities for interactive and collaborative learning, promoting critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving skills among students.

Empowerment of students through research projects: The creation of research projects has empowered students to explore the topic of peaceful coexistence and engage in in-depth research using technology. By conducting interviews, searching for information online, and creating presentations, students have developed research skills and gained a deeper understanding of the subject matter. This hands-on approach to learning has increased their motivation, engagement, and ownership of their education.

Application development and awareness promotion: The opportunity for students to develop games, maps, and applications based on their research findings has added new possibilities for raising awareness about peaceful coexistence. These digital tools can be shared within the school and the local community, fostering dialogue and understanding between Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots. The impact extends beyond the school environment, reaching the broader local community and potentially contributing to societal change and improved relations.

Overall, the identified solutions as good practices have brought about improvements in learning outcomes, teaching practices, school management, and the local community. Students have benefited from enhanced access to technology, increased engagement in research projects, and the development of critical skills. Teachers have been able to incorporate technology in their teaching, making their lessons more interactive and student- centered. The school management, including the principal, has demonstrated effective leadership in promoting innovative practices. The local community has been positively impacted through the dissemination of research findings and the potential for improved understanding and peaceful coexistence.
