POTAMIA PRIMARY SCHOOL
School 11 membersPotamia Primary School, is located in the village Potamia in the province of Nicosia. It is a rural village and is located near the green line. In the area, the inhabitants are engaged in agriculture and animal husbandry. In recent years, new houses have been built in the village and it is growing. In our village, Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots coexist harmoniously, which one can perceive by observing "pictures" from the daily life of the residents. Around 570 Greek Cypriots and around 17 Turkish Cypriots live in the village.
Potamia Primary School consists of the old building built in 1925 and the new building built in 1979 and which was extended in 2005. The old building used to be the Greek Primary School of Potamia, which was also attended by children from the neighboring village of Agios Sozomenos. The building consisted of a stone-built classroom, which was renovated and is still in use today. Next to the old building there was still a room that served as the teacher's house. Later, the Potamia Municipal Kindergarten was built on this site. At the same time, a Turkish School of Elementary Education operated in the village, which was closed due to the riots of 1963-64. The number of Turkish Cypriots decreased significantly after 1964, due to the bi-communal riots, and in 1975, due to the Turkish invasion of 1974. Thus, the remaining Turkish Cypriot students studied at Potamia Primary School together with the Greek Cypriot students. Today, although there are no Turkish Cypriot students in the Primary School, the community of Potamia is one of the few communities in our Cyprus, where Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots work together and continue to coexist harmoniously and peacefully.
