Age of the Universe

The Hubble Law tells us that our Universe is expanding. We observe galaxies, find their distances and their velocities, and find that they are all moving away from us. The more distant the galaxy, the faster it is moving away. From this information, we can estimate the age of our Universe. We assume that the Universe has always been expanding at the same rate, then we know how long distant galaxies have been travelling in order to get where they are today

Building Constellations

Looking at the night sky, there is no clue that stars lie at very different distances from us. Moreover, there is a general idea that stars in a constellation lie near each other. This activity helps students identify a few constellations; realize what constellations are (areas in the sky) and their important role in the history of mankind. Using the planetarium software Stellarium and Digital Universe, students will discover that stars on the same constellations are unrelated to each other and with a hands-on model they will understand why stars seem to be all at the same distance.

Climate Change

Students acquire knowledge on environmental problem of global climate change and studying the causes, consequences and ways recently to address the problem. To study the phenomenon students take part researcher: a) for the processing and analysis of data, b) cultivating the mathematical solving skills algebraic problems for explanation and arguments of the results and c) explores the scientific field of knowledge to examine ways solving the problem.

Concept Map of indesciplinarity in Science for Climate Change

Students are invited to take on the role of a scientist (http://bit.do/concept_map_lesson_plan) depending on their inclinations by thematic field of science) and to link their knowledge to study the causes, consequences and ways of tackling the phenomenon of climate change. The methodological scientific inquiry consists of the following stages:

Digging Into Comets

The solar system is littered with Ice. The bulk of this material orbits quietly in the outer Solar System, but sometimes something disturbs the ice and it comes plunging in toward the Sun. In this lesson, we will discuss comets, how we explore them, and how they brought water to worlds like Earth.
