The Hubble Law tells us that our Universe is expanding. We observe galaxies, find their distances and their velocities, and find that they are all moving away from us. The more distant the galaxy, the faster it is moving away. From this information, we can estimate the age of our Universe. We assume that the Universe has always been expanding at the same rate, then we know how long distant galaxies have been travelling in order to get where they are today! In this lesson we will use a balloon to
This community brings together teachers who are using resources, virtual experiments and online labs from the fields of Astronomy and High Energy Physics (HEP). Among other activities, it offers access training, resources and to a network of robotic telescopes and the major CERN experiments, ATLAS and CMS. Transit of Mercury 2016 Live at: http://ustre.am/1vYJ6 The organisers of the recent projects IYA2009 - Shape of the Earth, ERATOSTHENES experiment and IYA2009 - Distance to the Moon and
A community to accompany the Hands on Astronomy conference held in Cardiff in April 2015. Conference Programme More information and links Updated delegate information
Hydrogen is being touted as a possible source of fuel for the future. This lesson will investigate whether hydrogen has a serious potential for the future and will look at the hydrogen fuel cell.
The scope of this community is to create a central point for all authors of the ISE Demonstrators, in order to train them in the use of the ISE Authoring Tool.
This community will enable teachers, students and researchers involved in extended collaborative activities. It introducesthem to the field of science through the use of resources and tools bringing together a network of educational communities, eLearning tools and resources and relevant partners of the field. Through the Inspiring Science Education website and the activities organised by the partners, teachers can help students make their own scientific discoveries, witness and understand
In this community all digital ISE-Demonstrators are available: Demonstrators show you how the the ISE pedagogical approach can be implemented in practice. You can use Demonstrators as they are or clone it and adapt it to your own requirements.
To verify the theoretical predictions for the acceleration of an object at the moon’s surface using Newton’s Universal Law of Gravitation. use LoggerPro software to analyse a movie of a real astronaut jumping on the moon, and determine all sorts of interesting data!
Have you ever wondered what causes mirages, how lenses can focus light, or why your feet look closer and bigger in a pool of water than you know they are? This concept, known as refraction (Snell’s Law) is investigated using experimental video data.
Alternative energy sources are energy sources other than the nonrenewable fossil fuels—coal, petroleum, and natural gas. Solar energy, or energy from the sun, is one energy source alternative. A passive solar heating system uses no pumps, fans, or mechanical devices. Insulation and heat storage are important factors in such a system. In this lesson plan, you will investigate the factors that contribute to an energy efficient home, build and model that uses the principle of thermal mass, and

Did you ever wonder why it takes two batteries stacked together to run a flashlight or why your video game player takes four batteries? Why do they need to be put into these devices a certain way? This activity will allow you to explore how all this works by measuring the voltages across different numbers of batteries stacked together
