Clocks and Gears

5
This community is about the Clocks and Gears workshop for primary schools which teaches children the mathematics of gears and how gears can be used to make mechanical clocks. This workshop has been inspired by the Antikythera Mechanism.

CREATIONS

70
Welcome to the CREATIONS community How can young people’s interest in science be increased? 16 partners from ten European countries want to break new ground. In CREATIONS, a project funded by the European Union, they develop creative approaches based on art for an engaging science classroom. The CREATIONS community portal creates a vital environment of innovative approaches, activities and resources for teachers and students towards Scientific Research. All tools hosted in this portal are based

CREATIONS-ACADEMY

Explaining physics concepts through fine arts

3    |    Science
The difficulty in visualising what takes place in the quantum world has a close relationship to the artist attempting to express their ideas and emotions about the world. Both are concerned with “making the invisible, visible.” “In-Public” a new community arts group co-founded by Ian Andrews and Sarah Fortes Mayer have been collaborating with the particle physics group at the University of Birmingham to develop a series of workshops for schools. The workshops, developed with particle physicist

Neutrino Passoire

This community is linked to the Neutrino Passoire dance performance event which was presented by the Particle Physics Group as part of Arts & Science Festival 2016

Particle Physics Masterclass

11
Particle physics and the work of the Large Hadron Collider are very inspirational topics and students are curious about the ongoing research. Often, though, teachers do not feel they have the knowledge and background to be able to answer their students’ questions. The particle physics masterclass allows students, and teachers, to interact with the scientists and engineers working at the Large Hadron Collider, and gives them the opportunity to experience particle physics for themselves.

Particle Physics Workshop

6    |    Science
This community is about a particle physics workshop designed for primary (or low-secondary) school students. The workshop includes: Interactive talk on the research that is carried out at CERN, the atomic and sub-atomic structure of matter and the families of particles in the standard model. Interactive demos on how physicists discover what particles are inside atoms without being able to see the particles themselves Workshop 1 where students design and make a model of a subatomic particle using

Physics and Fine Art

2
Scientific developments have seen reality dissolved into smaller and smaller invisible particles that the physicist has to make visible, a process mirrored by the artist attempting to express thoughts and emotions through the manipulation of materials. Taking the same journey from something hidden to something revealed, schools come and experiment with ways of visualising particle physics ideas using mark-making, simple three-dimensional materials, photography and film, to explore the intriguing
