Understanding how external media such as maps and diagrams influence spatial learning and reasoning is crucial to improving spatial learning and to education. Maps and charts highlight spatial relations that can be difficult, and at times impossible, to perceive on the basis of direct experience. For example, by looking at a map, one could easily see the relative spatial position of several cities across the United States. This information would be very difficult to acquire directly from travel or to describe in words.

Students must be engaged in a highly motivating learning experience, which is closely related to the

tasks and challenges of the real world.

Therefore, emphasis must be given on the learning-by-doing, where the activities in authentic

context are strongly emphasized, which means the skills needed in working life, such as being able

to work in teams, working in self-guided manner, and assessing of own actions (Thomas, 2000).

Main problems:

a) lack of students engagement

b) theoretical and abstract teaching

c) textbook based instruction

d) no demonstration infrastructure available

e) students misconceptions

f) lack of embedded assessment methods
