The aim of “SACs” is to support project‐based learning and interactive hands‐on activities that connect science, technology, art and crafts with everyday life. Taking this into account we have developed the following:
Model 1 (implemented)
Curricular program (Alternanza Scuola Lavoro) comprised of different art experiments over 2 terms (trimestri) that enabled the students of the classes involved in the project to experience, improve and work with their knowlege by combining Art and Science. The project is Science and Art oriented and the methodology is project‐based, inquiry and cooperative. The path included “Astronomy”, “Science”, "Physics", "Maths" “English”, "Italian", “Graphics”, “Art” and “Crafts”. Each work of art was supported by a theoretical background with relevant accompanying practical activities, which lead to a final Art Exhibition in a Museum.

Learning objectives
The activities of our program focus on boosting STEAM (Science Technology Engineering Art and Mathematics) to improve creativity and critical thinking. The project was designed within the frame of inquiry and cooperative learning to help students develop 21st century skills like communication, problem‐solving, creativity and critical thinking. Students also learn to collaborate in teams by using the inquiry method and artistic skills. Furthermore, the students are being guided to take entrepreneurial steps in promoting and publishing their works of art.
Available partnership opportunities
Here are some partnership opportunities you should consider in your development:
| Web designers | The Educator can arrange online courses with web-designers. |
| Science and Art Teachers | Experts outside the program can participate voluntarily as assistants in arts and crafts. |
| Community |
Students conduct research to improve their local community partnerships with local bodies and craftsmen. |
| Conferences and other Science and Art Events |
Students can show their projects to the public and explain their concepts and key ideas. |
Recommended resources
- Interviews to Artists and Craftsmen to improve their knowledge and skills.
- Perform a final show or publication of the Artwork on the Arts and Crafts website.
- Make an online group/forum in order for the educators to cooperate easily with each other and upload relevant ideas and content.
- Equipment for every group of students: Labs and art studios for hands‐on activities.
- Have a computer and language laboratory, possibly an art workshop..
“SACs” is an curricular educational STEAM program that is implemented in Italy. The aim of the program is to support project‐based learning with interactive hands‐on activities that connect science, art and crafts with everyday life. Students learn to collaborate and deal with real‐world problems by using the inquiry method and technological interactive tools. The program has started in 2017 and has been implemented in Italy.

As the world becomes more interconnected and as research and technological know-how expands, new opportunities along with more complex social challenges arise. Overcoming these challenges will require all citizens to have a better understanding of science and art . Therefore, it is a great need to equip all individuals from a young age to participate actively and responsibly in STEAM related topics.

Through the OSOS platform, “STEAM - Science, Art and Crafts (SACs)” will give open access to the educational material that is developed by the Nitti research team. In this way we aim to share with the educational community useful material about new teaching approaches and examples of good practices in STEAM education.
Moreover, the students that will participate in the program, will have the opportunity to widen their knowledge in STEAM subjects and gain practical techical skills. The class environment requires from the participants to work on student-groups in order to acquire 21st century soft skills like communication, creativity, critical thinking and problem-solving. At the end of the program all participants will conduct research with their team and they will create innovative products to give to improve their local community.

The project focusses on innovation that remains tightly coupled with Science, Technology, Engineering and Math – the STEM subjects, although Art + Design are poised to transform our economy in the 21st century just as science and technology did in the last century.
We need the students to add Art + Design to the equation — to transform STEM into STEAM.
STEM + Art = STEAM
