Social Media Toolkit for Education

This toolkit was born out of the question of: To what extent is and can social media be used for teaching, learning and research? You will be able to choose the right social media tool for your practice; You will be able to apply the fitting social media tool in your teaching.  While the Toolkit was developed keeping in mind higher education teachers and professors, it is now available for all levels of education with a very easy, intuitive and usable online tool. The Digiskills project selected this practice for its Good Practice repository for it's user-friendliness, transferability to all teaching practices and accessability. It has been presented at the Digiskills workshop of the EDEN 2014 Annual Conference Synergy Strand. Take a look at the explanation video:

 

The Toolkit is an outcome of the Somecat project, a joint project between the Center for Innovative Teaching and Learning, School of Management and Law, Zurich University of Applied Sciences (Coordinator); the Political Science Department of Perm State University (Russia); the Department of Informatics at Ankara University (Turkey) and the nexus Institute for Cooperation Management and Interdisciplinary Research (Germany).

 

How it works

1. Analyzing Teaching Process

In the first step we will help you analyse your teaching process by asking four key questions:
  1. What are your teaching goals?
  2. What content do you intend to use?
  3. What instructional methods do you plan to use?
  4. How will the students’ work be assessed?

2. Identifying Appropriate Social Media Types

Based on the answers in Step 1, the tool works out which social media types will best suit your instructional setting. To help us do this, we will use an algorithm based on pedagogical principles and instructional design theory.

3. Applying the Guidelines

In this step we will provide guidelines about how you can apply the social media activities identified in Step 2 to your particular instructional setting.
To help us build up an evidence-based library about the use of social media in teaching, and to help other colleagues in the sector, we would kindly ask you to provide us with feedback about the impact of these activities on your students’ learning.
 
4. After using the tool, you will be requested to give direct feedback on how you embedded the advices in their practice. T
