Mittaamalla samana päivänä auringon korkeuskulmat kahdella eri paikkakunnalla auringon ollessa korkeimmillaan, saadaan korkeuskulmien erotuksesta paikkakuntien välisten leveyspiirien välinen ero. Jos paikkakunnat ovat samalla pituuspiirillä ja niiden välimatka linnunteitse tunnetaan, niin näillä tiedoilla saadaan helposti laskettua maapallon
