There is a chronic underrepresentation in Europe of children from migrant communities that choose to pursue careers in science, technology and engineering. Consequently an enormous reservoir of untapped talent exists that could be potentially mobilised for the benefit of society. The Space Awareness Programme is therefore devoting special attention to reaching out to schoolchildren in migrant.
Journey to a democratic classroom: A teacher of English working with DemoDram tools.
The free/open source software and design communities; the hackerspaces and the do-it-yourself enthusiasts; the movements for an independent Internet; the initiatives for free/communal wifi and open access to knowledge; the resilient/permaculture communities... What do all these have in common? Are they unrelated cases or coincidences? Or could they be seen as seeds of a new civilization full of contradictions and chances for renaissance and change?
This scenario involves the use of Games in the teaching of English vocabulary. Most of the games involve role-playing and are designed as either warm-up or main activities. As with all classroom games, they focus on active participation and team building among peers. They should not be seen as simple ice-breakers, but as serious attempts to engage students in collaborative learning with a bit of fun.
The workshop is in two parts, the first part is an exploration of the world of a 14-year-old boy. The participants watch a morning in the boy’s life when he should be at school, making decisions about why he acts as he does. At the end of this domestic scene the boy takes a kitchen knife, puts it in his pocket and leaves. The second part the participants examine how a drama lesson can help young people address some of the issues young people are facing through the dramatization of a fictional event.
The students build and use an old navigational tool from the Arab world of the 9th century, the kamal. After an introduction to historic seafaring and navigation, they build this simple tool and understand how it can be used to measure angles. After learning that the elevation of Polaris is (almost) identical to the latitude of the observer, they apply this knowledge while using the kamal. During a field trip, they actually measure the elevation of Polaris. The result is compared with modern methods.

It is common that learning materials need modifications and additions before they can be used in the classroom. Inquiry activities are no exception, and many teachers may find it natural and necessary to adapt existing inquiry activities to their local needs and circumstances. There may also be teachers who do not naturally consider adaptation and thus may ignore and miss potentially applicable and productive inquiry activities.
