Introduction to map projections

A practical exercise on map projections to identify what the most suitable projection of Finland would be. 

Students try to project a country (Finland) from an illuminated earth globe to four different types of forms made of paper: cylinder (vertical and horizontal), cone and a plane paper. They then compare and discuss results, advantages and disadvantages of each projection. They also compare some world map projections.

Mapping flooded area using radar satellite remote sensing

A case study of flooding in Germany July 2021.

In this practical exercise, students will process radar satellite imagery data from Sentinel-1 mission to map flooded area in Germany July 2021. They will learn to process radar images using the free and open-sources Sentinel processing software SNAP, and do simple visualisation and overlays using OpenStreet Map and QGIS. Tasks include the extraction of water surface areas and identification of flooded areas.

A case study for Lake Mead (U.S.A) using Landsat satellite imagery data. 

In this practical exercise, students will process multi-spectral satellite imagery data from Landsat missions to understand environmental changes over times (2000-2021). They will learn to process raster and vector data, and spatial analysis using the free and open-source GIS software QGIS. Tasks include the calculation of water surface areas in 2000 and 2021, where students are thereafter expected to dicuss reasons for why water surface areas are declining (climate changes? Or human activities?).
