9 schools in Evia and Attica worked together in order to inform and raise awareness in the school and local community about the disastrous results of fires in Evia's and Attica's regions. The activities lasted two days: the first day environmental scientists, firefighters and students with their teachers participated in an online meeting. Scientists presented the consequences of Climate change and deforestation while firefighters and students talked about their personal experiences during the fires. The second day, at the same time, each school organized an event in the center of each town so as to inform the local community through a questionnaire about Climate change and leaflets from Life Terra. At the end of the event, small recyclable pots were offered to the citizens by the students. The event was sponsored by the mayor of our town. As a result of our successful activity, the Green sector of our municipality is planning to make our school greener by creating a small garden in the schoolyard with an automatic watering system.
Background
Our school is an eco-school sensitized to the adverse consequences of Climate change. We have participated in many environmental projects and we are member of many environmental networks like eco-schools, Aeiforo Elliniko Sxoleio, Schools4climate, CAP schools, SDGs schools club, etc. The school has an environmental blog "The 8th activists" where all our activities are included. Thus, after the fires in Evia and Attica, the students decided to raise awareness to the school and local community. They made a Climate change questionnaire, posters and used recyclable pots to plant seeds. It took a month to get ready for the outdoor event at the town hall.
Futurel Plans
The 9 schools of this project will continue their cooperation the next school year. The local authorities (mayor) promised to help us creating "green" places around and in the school. The participant students will visit the schools that were striken with the fires and participate in reforestation events.
