Food production has a big impact on the environment. The UN estimates that the food industry is responsible for 30% of world energy consumption and 22% of the gases that cause global warming. The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) point out that by 2050 there will be more than 9 billion human beings on the planet and that we will need to produce 60% more food. What choices should we make to minimize the impact of food production on our planet…

The 12th grade Biology classes at our school follow the project work methodology. Students are involved in design, problem solving, decision making, and investigative activities. Students work autonomously and prepare realistic products or presentations.

Students surveyed the community in general to try to find out if they had enough knowledge about GMOs or organic food and if they had any idea of the real impact of food production on our planet.

The project can work as a central teaching strategy, students find and learn central concepts through the realization of a project because the project activities involve the transformation and construction of knowledge by the students. They imply more student autonomy, autonomous work and more responsibility. Living-lab project work integrates real-life challenges, the focus is on authentic problems or issues, and the solutions obtained have the potential to be considered or implemented in real life.
