The objective of the Filmmaking Workshops were to introduce children to the world of filmmaking and nurture their storytelling abilities. Through interactive workshops and activities, the project aimed to achieve the following goals:
1. Familiarize Children with Filmmaking: Introduce children to the different roles involved in making a film, such as directors, producers, and camera operators. Help them understand the collaborative nature of filmmaking and the importance of each role in bringing stories to life.
2. Inspire Creativity and Imagination: Expose children to a variety of short films and movie clips to spark their imagination and show them the creative possibilities of filmmaking. Encourage them to think outside the box and explore unique ideas for their own short films.
3. Develop Storytelling Skills: Teach children the elements of a good story and what makes a narrative engaging. Guide them in brainstorming ideas, developing plots, and creating compelling characters that drive their films' narratives forward.
4. Enhance Communication and Collaboration: Encourage children to work in small groups or individually, fostering communication and collaboration skills. Provide opportunities for them to share ideas, give and receive feedback, and work together to plan and execute their short films.
5. Foster Critical Thinking and Problem-Solving: Engage children in tasks and assignments that require critical thinking, such as refining plot points, conducting research, and developing detailed character backgrounds. Help them develop problem-solving skills to overcome challenges encountered during the filmmaking process.
6. Provide Hands-On Filmmaking Experience: Equip children with practical filmmaking skills by allowing them to create storyboards, plan shots, and execute their short films. Offer guidance and feedback throughout the process to help them improve their storytelling and filmmaking abilities.
7. Showcase and Celebrate Children's Films: Culminate the project with a screening event where children's short films are showcased to an audience. Provide them with a platform to share their creative work and celebrate their achievements as emerging storytellers. By achieving these objectives, the Filmmaking Workshops aimed to inspire children, nurture their creativity, and empower them to become confident storytellers through the medium of filmmaking
With our objectives met we decided to expand the reach of the project by submitting our finished product into the national film making competition for primary schools. The competition that we entered is described below.
FÍS (literally translated from Irish as Vision) was officially launched in 2000. Tens of thousands of Irish primary school children have been involved in FÍS film making over the lifetime of the project. The project has demonstrated that film-making can provide creative, relevant and memorable learning experiences for children. What’s more, because of the collaborative nature of film-making, they develop communication, team working, decision making, problem solving as well as technical skills – all of which helps to prepare them for the future.
