Within the Biology discipline, and by working on the theme of sustainable development throughout the year, we had the opportunity to restore the school composter that had been inactive for some years. Although we have not started the school utilisation and composting process this year, we hope that the project will be followed next year. “Acting today is thinking about tomorrow”
Background
The 12th grade Biology classes at our school follow the project work methodology. Students are involved in design, problem solving, decision making, and investigative activities. Students work autonomously and prepare realistic products or presentations.
Reflection
The project can work as a central teaching strategy, students find and learn central concepts through the realization of a project because the project activities involve the transformation and construction of knowledge by the students. They imply more student autonomy, autonomous work and more responsibility. Living-lab project work integrates real-life challenges, the focus is on authentic problems or issues, and the solutions obtained have the potential to be considered or implemented in real life.
Futurel Plans
It is intended to reactivate the composter in the next school year with food scraps that come from the school canteen and bar.
