Water- Life Saver or Taker

•Colaiste Chill Mhantain is located in County Wicklow.
•As it is a seaside town, the students spend their summers jumping from the pier and playing in the water.
•At times, accidents can happen which result in the loss of life.
•Students will raise awareness of this issue and try and stop this from happening going forward by teaching all students to swim and training others as lifeguards.
•This will not only benefit the school but the entire school community and wider.
Learning Objectives
Students will raise awareness of water safety, Students will aim to teach all students to swim and train others as lifeguards.

How many people lose their lives each year as a result of drowning?

Were life rings at the locations where the drownings occurred?

Were those who died capable of swimming?

How far was the nearest Rescue station to the accident?

•Students will use the School Facebook to announce their project and keep the local community updated on what they are doing
•Students will create a factsheet based on their research about water sports in Ireland, tourism and food as well as listing how many Rescue teams and volunteers are in Ireland, and more specifically Wicklow.
•Students will conduct a survey within the school to determine how many students are able to swim
•From the information collected in the survey, students will create graphs
•They will then turn the graphs into music using onlinesequencer.net (Sound of the Sea)
•Students will contact the local swimming pool/swimming clubs and ask if they would be able to provide lessons to students over the course of the year as part of their Physical Education class.
•Students will contact the local RNLI and ask for a speaker to come to the school and give a talk to the students and the community
•Transition Year (16 year old) students will run the initiative as part of their Young Social Innovator Program
•These students will have the opportunity to train as Lifeguards and become first aid trained over the course of the year
•School facebook updated
•Fact sheets are printed and distributed to the school and local community
•Survey takes place, musical piece is created and downloaded using midi
•Local swimming pool contacts to explain if they can or cannot provide swimming lessons
•Speaker delivers informative talk to school and community
•TY students train as lifeguards and learn basic first aid
  • Students use Social Media to make the school students and local community  aware of what they are doing
  • Students distribute the factsheets to the school students and local community
  • Students publish an article in the local newspaper after the visit of the Rescue team to the school
  • Students visit local primary schools before the summer break and explain the dangers of the water and that fun can be had while staying safe!
