School Garden

Hosted by OSOS , contributed by Rclarke on 3 July 2018

Develop a community garden for the school where students and the community at large can work together to learn about growing crops, maintaining biodiversity and sustainability and caring for the environment

Learning Objectives
to design and build a pollinator friendly garden

We organised a grand launch of our project to get as many people as possible interested. Here is the newspaper report.. well it would be if we could attach the files

We first stopped the gardner from mowing the grass in our wildlife area and then set about planning our garden for all year round use. This was fun because all of us had different ideas about how we should do it. Here are some pictures of our plans.

We were lucky to get the offer of a lot of materials from interested groups. For example Dublin City University were very helpful and paid for a lorryload of recycled scaffolding boards to make raised beds with. The council arranged for transport of 120 tonnes of topsoil from a housing estate that was being build nearby. We managed to get 100 tonnes of cobblelock paving that was destined for landfill so that we can use our garden even when the ground is wet without getting dirty. Intel helped alot and provided 16 apple trees for our orchard and a lot of seeds form Irish Seedsavers which does heritage varieties. The Kildare beekeepers came and planted four bee friendly trees as well.

OUr garden is now one year old and we have had loads of produce from it, including Lumper potatoes (the Irish famine potato), beans, pees, brussel sprouts, carrots and a load of other plants. WE are now planting it up for 2020
