EFFICIENT BUILDINGS BASED IN CACTUS

EFFICIENT BUILDINGS BASED IN CACTUS

Hosted by OSOS , contributed by DI FONZA on 11 July 2019

This project was designed in OSOS Summer School 2019 by teachers from:

ITALY
Mario Di Fonza
Rosanna Busiello
Sabrina Nappi
FRANCE:
Delphie GUILLAUME.
SPAIN:
Susana Requena
Vicente Cava
Luis Verde

The project is based in Biomimicry Methodology.

He same applies to the intricate structural designs of cactus, which are exposed to a great deal of heat pressure in the desert. Their heat-reflecting capacity is low, since their surface is greatly reduced so as to cut down on evaporation. Nature has solved the problem by equipping many cacti with cooling ribs. These shade the cactus’s surface against the scorching sun and simultaneously improve heat radiation. The alternating planes of light and shade of the vertical cooling ribs of the torch thistle produce rising and falling air currents, which improve heat radiation. And when the sun reaches its highest position, it hits the torch thistle from above, where it presents its smallest surface. A botanist discovered that torch thistles perish of burns when they are placed horizontally in the sun.

Learning Objectives
to develop skills in communication, working in group by enquiring. Learn about mathematical, physic and biological content. To develop the link between the nature and the human enginnering

Hello!

ACTIVITY:

  • Can you imagine staying inside the cactus? How affect the cactus' arquitecture in the air cooling?
  • How can you create the shape and design of the cactus?
  • Is it achievable?

ACTIVITY

The students analyse the characteristics of the cactus

Hello!

ACTIVITY. Create a cactus with paper mache

It seems to be very interesting. I really like the idea of the implementation this kind of  porjects in schools. Thank you OSOS Summer School.
