I am Professor of Education and Associate Dean for Research and Enterprise in the Faculty of Education, Law and Social Science at Birmingham City University. I have responsibility for research and researcher development in four Units of Assessment (Education, Law, Social Policy and Psychology) and lead our Graduate School. My own research work is primarily focused in adult literacy and teacher development and I have published widely and led national and international externally funded projects in these areas, I’m currently contributing to the Comenius funded ESTEP project looking at parental engagement in schools and an HEA funded project exploring workplace literacies. I teach on BCU's PhD and EdD programmes and also contribute to teacher education courses for the post-compulsory sector. Outside the university I have a number of roles including Co-Leadership of a specialist SIG, editorial and reviewing work for a number of journals, serving as a member of the Research Committee of the Universities’ Council for the Education of Teachers and the International Committee of the International Professional Development Association and representing a local community trust on the governing body of two schools.
