2nd Minority Primary School of Komotini, Greece

Komotini is a multicultural and multilingual city which is located in the northeastern part of Greece. Our School is situated near the center of Komotini and next to the mosque. The program of our School is bilingual and our students are Muslims.

Our School is a Platon School.

We have been involved in many projects:

Since 2012 we seed traditional plant varieties in our school. We collaborate together with other teachers in a network of local schools which counts 17 years. Every year around February all the students together with the teachers seed tomatoes, peppers and eggplants in the schoolyard. We nourish them and when they have grown we share a part of them in a community festival with growers. The rest of the plants of traditional varieties are shared between the students. They learn how to grow their own food and at the same time preserve and spread seeds of traditional plant varieties. The preservation of traditional seeds was the subject of eTwinning projects that we participated, take a looκ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SZzUIvLrkO8&t=4s

We are active eTwinners and have been awarded with 2 European Quality Labels foρ our projects.

Every year we participate in the “Eratosthenes Experiment” in which we calculated the circumference of the Earth by using eLearning educational tools and simple instruments.

We also train like an Astronaut by participating in Mission X for 3 years now. 2016-7:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hcI5c_zB05I 2017-8 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b-bp3TS9u0U

Inquiry Based Science Education (IBSE) has been applied in our school since 2016. http://graasp.eu/ils/5b04df1a02e852fe999dd975/?lang=el .

Inspired by "Astronaut Academy" ILS we made a Planetarium out of carton and wooden skeleton.

At first with the help of the parents we collected many carton boxes but the sizes did not suit us. So we changed our plans & decided to make it out of a wooden skeleton that consisted of 5 hexagons and 6 pentagons. Our class became a workshop. We measured and crafted the hexagons and pentagons and half hexagons. For the internal cover of our planetarium we used toilette paper from the local paper industry. At the end of the previous school year we set it up in the amphitheater of the 4th Gymnasium of Komotini and presented it to:

  • our whole school the 2nd Minority Primary School of Komotini, 125 students and to the parents of my students
  • the 6th graders of 4 other Primary Schools of our town, around 80 students

You can read about it in the local newspaper “XRONOS”. http://www.xronos.gr/reportaz/xehoristo-planitario-toy-2oy-meionotikoy-sholeioy-komotinis

During Space Week 2018 we presented it to the whole 2nd and 3rd  grade of the 4th  Gymnasium in Komotini, 230 students in total.

3D Printing in 2nd Minority Primary School of Komotini

Finally we were among the 5 Schools that were granted last school year with a 3D printer by https://edu.ellak.gr/ in cooperation with http://www.openwise.eu/  (https://eellak.ellak.gr/wp-content/uploads/sites/23/2018/03/%CE%94%CE%A4-3dprinters-schools.pdf). After learning how to 3D print in our School we had shared our 3D Printer and our knowledge in two "3D Printing workshops" , the 1st one was held in the 2nd Gymnasium of Komotini in Novebmer.  and the second one was held in our School. Students of 5th and 6th grade of 10 Schools of our District participated. They all designed in teams a label for their School and the best design was 3D printed and given to them.
