60 second adventure in Astronomy

A series of 14 one-minute cartoons, created by the Open University, explaining selected astronomical topics. The last two cartoons, listed above, were developed for Gaia. The other 12 cartoons in the series are: The Big Bang, Supernovae, Exoplanets, A Day on Mercury, The Rotating Moon, Life on Mars, Event Horizons, Dark Matter, Dark Energy, Special Relativity, Large Hadron Collider and Black Holes. - See more at: http://gaia.ac.uk/multimedia#60-sec

Discover the COSMOS

Explanation: This webcam and telescope image of banded gas giant Jupiter shows the transit of three shadows cast by Jupiter's moons in progress, captured in Belgian skies on October 12 at 0528 UT. Such a three shadow transit is a relatively rare event, even for a large planet with many moons. Visible in the frame are the three Galilean moons responsible, Callisto at the far left edge, Io closest to Jupiter's disk, and Europa below and just left of Io. Of their shadows on the sunlit Jovian cloud tops, Callisto casts the most elongated one near the planet's south polar region at the bottom.

EU Universe Awareness: Inspiring every child with our wonderful cosmos

EU-UNAWE follows the same vision as UNAWE: to use the beauty and grandeur of the Universe to inspire young children and encourage them to develop an interest in science and technology. The programme also aims to introduce children to the idea of global citizenship and tolerance at a crucial stage of their development – to show them that they are part of an international community.

Hang out video: Wakeup, Rosetta! 100 day count-down begins

A hang out on the beginning of the 100-day countdown to the Rosetta Spacecraft beginning its exploration of comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko. On wakeup day, ESA will beam messages from groups around the world to the spacecraft. You can contribute your own wakeup message on the Rosetta Facebook page: http://woobox.com/vqgzq5 (there are some really cool ones posted already). During this hangout, we'll show some of the best videos, so enter your own today and potentially see it on-air on January 20. Want to share your video with our community now?

ISON comet with SOHO images

Images taken by the SOHO satellite (Lasco C3) showing the trajectory of the ISON comet towards the Sun. The Sun in these images is covered and would have the size of the white circle. Amazing ejection of coronal material can also be seen in this movie. The movie was done using the free software for image processing, Salsa J

Lesson Plans and Resources for Arts Integration in Science curricula

All teachers at Bates Middle School are expected to use arts integration in their classrooms. Dance in science, pop art in Spanish, or photography in math -- there’s no end to the ways arts can be integrated into other curricula. Educators from Bates Middle School, in Annapolis, Maryland, share arts-integrated lessons and resources that you can use in your school.  Science teacher Stacey Burke (center) and her colleagues share some of their arts-integrated lessons.

Rosetta orbiting Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko

Rosetta’s 11-year expedition began in March 2004, with an Ariane 5 launch from Kourou in French Guiana, and the spacecraft was then sent on its way towards the outer Solar System. The long journey includes three gravity assists at Earth (2004, 2007, 2009), one at Mars (2007), and two asteroid encounters: (2867) Steins (2008) and (21) Lutetia (2010).

Understanding Particle Physics (education game)

CERN will develop an e-learning game, building on experiences with primitive prototypes already developed by CERN, in which players try to “tune” a simulation of high-energy particle collisions to give an optimal description of a chosen set of reference data, while simultaneously learning about particle physics. Ultimately, it should be possible for a Mrs. Smith, playing “Virtual Atom Smasher” in her spare time, to find a parameter set which is superior to the default one (which provides a natural scoring target).
