Vocational pathways and more... in my city

Secondary education is highly connected to the socio-economical situation of the targeted markets by its students.

In secondary vocational schools in our country, where the crisis is an important factor, there is a need for the motivation of the students in order to lower the rate of drop outs. Based on our experience, when professionals that graduated from such schools return to them and discuss/collaborate  with the students they are very well accepted, admired and act like agents of motivation for our students.

On the other hand these professionals need to be advertized as wider as possible with the cheapest way. The use of  geospatial information that serves as basemap for the detection of their stores in a city. When the students undertake such a task through a learning scenario a multilayered collaboration occurs.

This collaboration is very beneficial for:

-the students: They are motivated, connected to the profession, enhance the possibilities to be employed, develop geographical  skills as they learn to read maps of their city and enhance them towards geospatial skills on the basis of the use of technology to represent and refer upon features on the basemaps.

-the professionals: they are emotionally connected to the education system as volunteers, get familiar with the future professionals, detect possible employees and expand their reputation/advertizing chances.

-the teacher/school: innovates as far as the integration of school knowledge and reality, through spatial thinking in a highly collaborative ICT based interdisciplinary approach.

This scenario describes a multilayered lesson in vocational education with  the following characteristics.

Students from the electronics engineering (group A) and the civil engineering (group B) specialties from a secondary level school were engaged in a lesson structured upon the Inquiry based teaching Model in order to develop a map of their city that depicts  electronics stores and infer upon it.
