Citizens often take down the waste for recycling without fitting into the recycling bins, resulting in the bins either overflowing or ending up in the common waste and then in a landfill. People with special needs, the elderly or ordinary people who have their hands full are not always facilitated by the system
opening the bins. Also, there is a fear of contamination as there is no automation for the opening. Sometimes problems are observed, such as moving the bins, but the citizens do not know where to turn, nor whether their issue will reach the person in charge.
Managers do not know which bins are full at any given time. So the collection workers follow specific routes periodically, without following the optimal route they should, making unnecessary trips around the city, wasting time and fuel, resulting in increased collection costs and burdening the environment. The weight of waste does not always correspond to its volume. Bins filled with light materials (eg cardboard) are considered incorrectly filled.
Many applications (apps) have been developed, but none that help citizens or waste collection officials with the status of bins in real time.
