Main challenge:

The main challenge faced was the lack of awareness and preparation of the Agia Barbara community regarding earthquakes. Previous events may not have given the community enough awareness of the dangers of earthquakes and the importance of preparation.

With the training and information provided during the project, the community had the opportunity to learn about the nature of earthquakes, their effect on the ground, and the need to prepare and respond in the event of an earthquake. This helped community members better understand the risks involved and gave them the tools to prepare and respond in the event of an earthquake.

In addition, the mutual exchange of knowledge and experiences between experts and community members has increased awareness and created a collaborative approach to earthquake response. The exercise enabled community members to share knowledge, train and collaborate to improve their safety and resilience in the event of seismic activity.

Action and initiatives:

The main challenge/problem faced was the lack of training and awareness of the community of Agia Barbara about earthquakes, the use of the seismograph and the analysis of ground vibrations.

To address this challenge, a number of key actions and initiatives have been undertaken. First, an educational event was organized in which students, teachers and members of the local community participated. During this event, experts from the local seismological organization presented the importance of using a seismograph and preparing for earthquakes.

A practical exercise was then carried out where a small-sized seismograph was installed in the school and the students learned how to read the data collected by it. During this activity, the basic concepts related to the analysis of ground vibration diagrams were explained.

Students had the opportunity to observe actual shaking samples from previous earthquakes and to learn how to read and interpret seismographic charts. Through this practice, students and community members gained an understanding of the nature of earthquakes, their effect on the ground, and the need to prepare and respond in the event of an earthquake.

Involvement of experts and communication with local community members was important to achieve the objectives. Collaboration with experts has enhanced awareness and the mutual exchange of knowledge and experience.

Overall, this practice allowed the community of Agia Barbara to be informed and prepared to deal with earthquakes, thereby enhancing their safety and resilience in the event of seismic activity.

Main change/improvement/impact:

Following the implementation of the solutions identified as good practices, a number of changes and improvements were observed in various areas. Some of these include:

Improved learning outcomes: This practice allowed students to gain more specific knowledge and understanding about earthquakes and the use of the seismograph. This enhanced learning outcomes and students' ability to perceive and analyze earthquakes.

Improvement of teaching practices: This experience positively influenced teaching practices in the school. Educators had the opportunity to use hands-on activities that incorporated real-world vibration samples and seismographic diagrams. This enhanced student engagement and interest and improved teaching effectiveness.

Improving school management: The installation of a small-scale seismograph in the school has enabled the development of crisis management and emergency response skills in the event of an earthquake. This improved the school's ability to deal with potential emergencies and provide a safe environment for students and staff.

Local community participation: The participation of local community members in the training event and the practical training enhanced the mutual exchange of knowledge and experiences. The community residents had the opportunity to learn about earthquakes and preventive measures, thus enhancing their awareness and resilience.
