Sustainable energy study and applications.

Hosted by OSOS , contributed by eksamou on 11 April 2019

A program for reducing environmental pollution using green energy. Specifically, the pupils will deal with the ongoing problem of power plants that have a huge CO2 footprint and will try to create a demonstrator of how solr power plants can be used more efficiently. The school is in Samos, which is located on an island in the Aegean Sea. Most days of the year are sunny, thus use of solar power could provide a large percetage of electric power used.

The project consists of two phases. This year a study will be done on the advantages and disadvantages of the use of solar power, as well as of other forms of "green" power. The pupils will work collect data from the libraries the web as well as gother information from locals about their ideas on the problem. At the end of the first phase a document will be availiable discribing students findings.

As a second phase that is planed to start next school year, puppils will develop a robotic mechanism that will automate the production of a solar panel. The mechanism will detect the best angle and then automaticaly  adjust the panel to look at this angle.

Learning Objectives
Research methodology, Engineering, Computer programming, Collaboration

Addressed Challenge: this FEEL phase will present the problem of expensive and poluting technologies used to provide electricity in the area. Then it will propose the better use of sustainable energy to reduce expenses and polution.

Recommended partnerships opportunities in this project:

  1. Citizens near the power plant: People that live near the power plant complain about the polution producd by it. Students should discuss the problem with them, propose the use of sustainabl energy and record their reactions and actual expectations.
  2. Municipality: Relevant municipal representatives will explain the students what is the current situation and how much of the electrical power produced on the island is produced form sustainable power plants.
  3. Local press representative: The press should be used for raising the awareness of the public to the problem.
  4. Parents: Parents should get acquainted with the problem and hear from the students about possible solutions.

The purpose of the project is to find solutions for a better environment in 2 aspects:

  1. Technological solutions that will allow them to better define the problem and to suggest solutions. This is where the students need to learn about the relevant technological tools that can help them with their projects.
  2. Raising the awareness of the public to this issue. The students will use the open school day to communicate this problem to other people.

This year we discussed with people of our villages, parents, friends and schoolmates to address the problem of environmental polution. We also did a research on the web about sustainable energy and its advandages.

Result of the first part of the project is a website that includes info about sustainable energy
