Hosted by OSOS , contributed by Sławomir Miernicki on 8 July 2020

Welcome to the road tourist trail commemorating the figure of Podlasie Astronomers and their relationship with Podlasie. Start your adventure by traveling on the nearly 300 km route. Learn about astronomer's life and activities. Visit historic buildings and places remembering the times of the great scholars, school exhibitions dedicated to theirs, observe and learn the secrets of the universe at the planetarium and astronomical observatories.

Learning Objectives
Getting to know the biography, history and astronomical activities of astronomers from Podlasie, i.e. Kajetan Kraszewski, Władysław Szaniawski, Tadeusz Rakowiecki, Franciszek Zdanowski. Increasing awareness among the inhabitants of the region.

Addressed challenge:

The aim is to shed light in the rediscovery little-known people, provide students and schools with educational scenarios employing biography, and activities and finally provide students with the means and methodology to raise awareness regarding astronomical observations.

This way, the students are trained to become sensitive and informed citizens, responsive to the needs of their local community, who will be able to understand and, in the future, manage knowledge in a consistent fashion.

Background knowledge acquisition

In this part of the project, students will learn about basic information about Podlasie as a historical region, biography, research and activities of astronomers from Podlasie and about existing methodologies for conducting astrtonomic research in the 18th and 19th centuries. They will be able to collaborate with astronomy experts and conduct dedicated sessions in their schools or virtual or physical visits to related research centers.

Identifying the problem and imagining solutions

Having obtained the background on astronomy in the past and methodology, students imagine how their school can act as a good name ambassador, actively participating and raising awareness of the civic science center and developing an action plan to implement it.

To facilitate the creation of action plans, students will establish contact with astronomy research institutions. The project also provides for inter-school collaboration, during which students of schools near places related to our astronomers will communicate with students from distant places to exchange experiences and practices.

Collaborating

In order to collaborate with other schools that are actively involved in the same project we should establish lasting cooperation.

Students will organize astronomical observations (outreach) to raise awareness for astronomy as a subject in which they will invite inhabitants to participate and debate.

Students will contact families, neighbors and general public to raise awareness about the astronomers, who lived there.

By the completion of the project, students will organize the trail of Podlasie Astronomers.

As a means for further dissemination, students will be encouraged to write articles in their school newspaper or in local newspapers, to participate in science fairs and festivals with their exhibits, videos and other material.

 Trail

Students will also build information boards or tourist guidebook.
