ReInventIt

Hosted by OSOS , contributed by Kunis on 26 September 2019

The main goal of the project is to increase students' knowledge in the fields of physics, science and ICT. For this purpose, students find and choose a particular discovery or invention that has impressed them. Their task is to rediscover it.

Learning Objectives
The learning objectives are deeper understanding of the concepts and practical skills to solve problems.

The share of physics dealing with electricity is our favorite. Since we are making a larger project for the first time, we decided to make one of Nikola Tesla's inventions, since they are classics. We opted for the Tesla Coil because it is very spectacular, captivating and popular. Also, the materials for making it are accessible and affordable.

The necessary parts are: N-channel MOSFET, resistor, diode, wires, soldering iron, solder, PVC pipe, PCU (PC charger).

We used the Slayer exciter circuit. In this circuit, the Tesla transformer is connected to an oscillator composed of a MOSFET, a resistor and a diode. It creates oscillation with the resonant frequency of the tank circuit, consisting of the secondary winding of the transformer and the parasitic capacitance to the ground. This oscillation causes a very high voltage induced in the secondary winding. This causes the air to ionize around the upper end of the secondary winding (plasma is formed).

We want to share our experience with our classmates, so we created this video.
