Water: drink at your risk!

Hosted by OSOS , contributed by frosty on 13 July 2018

Water is a very important resource. We need fresh clean water everyday.
The students will have to see what type of water they have access to and ask questions about it.

Learning Objectives
The students will learn that water is not the same and it is not pure. The substances dissolved in the water can be harmful or beneficial.

In Malta we don’t have much rain, and little or no access to natural water resources.

Students are encouraged to:

  • do research about the origin of the different types of drinking water available on our island.
  • check labels on bottles to check for chemicals present in the water.
  • devise ways of analyzing and quantifying the chemicals present in the water.
  •  investigate and research the effect of such chemicals on the human body.

Students can:

  • Collect different brands of bottled water.
  • Compare the chemicals present as stated on the labels.
  • Interact with a Chemistry lab to verify the presence and quantities of chemicals present.
  • Research the beneficial or adverse effects of the chemicals on our body.
  • Come up with alternative ideas on how to limit dangerous chemicals.

Students can:

  • Present data gathered in the form of tables, pie-charts, graphs etc.
  • Prepare an exhibition which shows the effect of water or the lack of it on our body and the beneficial or adverse effects of chemicals on our body.
  • Prepare a video showing how such chemicals originate and their final destination in our body. This could include interviews with people from the Water Authority and private bottling companies.

Students can:

•Upload their findings on the internet eg facebook, youtube etc.
•Create a leaflet to distribute at home and the general community.
•Set up an exhibition at school and local council to show their findings and reach the general public.
