Open Science Hub-Portugal (OSH-PT) is an open science hub that contributes to the development and innovation of a geographically-isolated region in Portugal (Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo). The OSH-PT, together with the school’s group of Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo (AEFCR) have been developing projects in order to position schools as collaboration hubs for community development and well-being, in collaboration with multiple stakeholders. To continue and deepen the work already started, the collaboration OSH-PT/AEFCR proposes to develop a project that has the aim of fighting a climate change-based local challenge - wildfires, in citizen science/social intervention projects developed under the scope of the discipline “Education for Citizenship” (1 hour per week) or open initiatives. Projects will be developed by students with ages comprehended between 12-18 years old (7th grade till the end of high school), in gender-balanced groups. Students with ages between 12-15 will develop their projects in the discipline of “Education for Citizenship” and high school students will participate voluntarily in this project by involving themselves in open initiatives coordinated by the 12-15 students. In these citizen science/social intervention projects, students will collaborate with families and stakeholders to find and implement solutions to fight wildfires in the region of Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo. All initiatives will be developed throughout the school year of 2018/2019 and will target a pilot group of ~ 50 students. Our goal is to expand the project in the period between 2019-2021: 2019/2020 - more students/classes; 2020/2021 - more schools.

Initiatives description and guidelines:
-
Participatory Lab: given that the climate change’s effect (wildfires) was already identified as a relevant local challenge, this participatory lab aims at bringing together school community, OSH-PT, families, community, civil society, regional associations, researchers, industry and political entities, and promote a design-thinking based session to identify causes for the wildfires and find solutions to tackle this problem.
-
Citizen science/social intervention projects: these projects will be developed under the discipline of “Education for Citizenship”, in collaboration with families and local stakeholders, aiming at finding solutions for wildfires in Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo (see table 1 for a potential design-thinking plan to be followed);
-
Social Media Debates + Open Discussion Sessions: creation of a social media platform (Facebook/FB) that manages and mediates debates about climate change/local effects of climate change in Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo to raise awareness and promote discussion through scientific content, testimonials, interviews and the dissemination of all project initiatives. With the results from all FB discussion and debates, a Discussion Session for families and local community will be held, at the end of each school period;
-
Inter-municipality school’s forum: this forum will enable the dissemination of the research results gathered in citizen science/social intervention activities under the scope of the discipline of “Education for Citizenship”, at the end of each school year. Students will organize and implement an inter-municipality forum with results discussion, training and participatory sessions on climate change effects and potential solutions to overcome these challenges. Through this science communication/education forum, students will be able to communicate their findings to a mixed crowd of the school community, local community, civil society members, enterprises, and local political power, together with experts in the field of climate change, including researchers and politicians. By recurring to the scientific evidence collected, and through discussion with local stakeholders and experts on the field of climate change, the intervenients of this forum will be able to find creative solutions for local challenges on climate change in the region - droughts and wildfires. Additionally, by being open to several municipalities, this forum sets the perfect setting to discuss the planned expansion of this project to other school groups in the district of Guarda;
-
Action Implementation: to fight droughts and fires on the municipality level, several action proposals will be presented in the inter-municipality forum mentioned before. These actions will be based on the results from the citizen science/social intervention initiatives developed during the classes of the discipline “Education for Citizenship”. Only one action will be selected to be implemented. In order to implement it, students will acquire funding from different sources, such as the municipality of Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo, crowdfunding schemes, Participatory Budgeting (public national contest on active citizenship) or organize social events on a donation-based entrance in school/regional activities.
