A part of Einstein’s Theory of Relativity involved the idea of gravitational waves that distort the fabric of spacetime. He made the prediction that they exist but didn’t think there could ever be a way of directly measuring them, but the technology now exists and the LIGO detectors have directly measured gravitational waves that are cosmic in origin. This activity will introduce students to the concepts of relativity, spacetime and gravitational waves.
