Physics and Music

Physics and Music

Hosted by OSOS , contributed by Elena_Kostova on 11 July 2019

Music has a great significance in people's lives. With the help of the music, a mood and a sense of sadness or joy is conveyed. Every musical piece has its own history - it shows a personal experience of the composer, or the beauty of nature. But how is music born and how does science relate to physics? The aim of the lesson is to show the inseparable link between music and physics in studying the concept of "sound".
Tasks:

Explain the basic terms - music, sound
To show the peculiarities of music in terms of physics
To define the basic characteristics of musical sounds from the point of view of physics. Make a connection between musical phenomena / strength, tone, timbre / with physical notions frequency and amplitude.
Explain the mechanism of work of basic musical instruments and the human voice.

Academic Lecturers

Students playing a musical instrument or singing together with their pedagogues from the community cultural centres in our town prepared reports on the mechanism of action of musical instruments and the human voice.

Public engagement

This lesson provides an opportunity for interaction between the school and external institutions conducting extracurricular activities with students.

Municipality

The lesson was hald in grade 9 by two teachers and was observed by 11 schcool teacher.

Community

Students used traditional musical instruments for this geographic area, which helps to preserve the traditions of the community.
Collaboration
Each of the teachers had to prepare their part of the lesson: Kostova in Physics and Astronomy, Tz. Kamenarsky in music and synesthesia. It was prepared in close cooperation and presented by the two lecturers.

Inclusion of RRI - Responsible Research and Innovation – principles:

Governance

The students had the opportunity to tell about their extracurricular activities and to study the way the music is created by the musical instruments they play and how it is related to physics.

Science Education

Before the lesson, students were doing their own research. For homework, they were tasked with studying how scientists created the music of planets from the Solar System.

Learning Objectives
Physics, music, art
To show the indissoluble connection of music and physics with the study of the notion of "sound." The world is full of different sounds - clock ticking, whispering of leaves, whistling of the wind, song of birds, people's voices, storm and music. What is music?

Tambour is the quality of the sound. In the timbre we recognize the voices of the different people and the musical instruments that perform the same melody in one tone and with the same force. The music and the instruments differ in the tone and tone of the voice.

Study how the different instruments and types of female and male voices sound.
Make conclusions from the study
Present the survey!
