Our program is part of the social challenge of urban accessibility (disabled in this case) and the urgent need to find sustainable proposals / solutions to reverse social injustice. Objectives of the program:

  1. To connect our students with theoretical knowledge (science) with the physical and social reality that surrounds them. We strive to prove to our students that STEM sciences are at the forefront of innovation for society.
  2. The further promotion of the digital literacy of the students - teachers of our school, which will be achieved through the responsible use of new technologies for the elaboration of a scientific program and the creation of an original application (app) or blog as a final product.
  3. The program will reinforce the goal of the Open School, as students will work with both scientific bodies and representatives of local government during the program, as well as with people with disabilities.
  4. From the latter will emerge as a great benefit the cultivation of solidarity, the culture of inclusion, empathy, since the program provides the opportunity for students to broaden their horizons and be able to see the city and the world through "other eyes "but also through" through the eyes of others ". At the same time the school embraces society, it works

within and for her, engages her and delivers a sustainable and ethical research end product.

The project combines the learning part (awareness + development of technological competences) with the service (diagnosis and action of complaint / advocacy).

It is an initiative of social innovation for the construction of friendly cities for all people who seek to satisfy social needs that currently are not adequately covered by the market or the public sector, opening a space for citizen participation. Thus, teenagers map their surroundings and make suggestions for improvement (writing an accessibility report).

ALL COMMUNITIES CAN EMBRACE SOCIAL SCHEMES-ACCESS is an ongoning project whose results are shown at https://reflecting4change2gelkalamatas.weebly.com/

Besides, by the moment, more than 70 stores and sidewalks evaluated from the school to the city center. About the data recollected by the students: sidewalks have many problems and stores are not accessible. Students realised about it AND have been discussed the difference between public and private; the need of a collective awareness.

Learning objectives

  • Interdisciplinary: Connects subjects like Mathematics, Ethics, Language, Computing, etc. with the reality
  • Participation and Citizen Science: Emancipatory and participatory approach. The youth and people with disabilities work together and are the protagonists of the reflection and action processes. Promotion of scientific and solidarity vocations.
  • Responsible use of new technologies:  Students map their city.
  • Promoting inclusion: Presence, participation and learning. Educational and Social Inclusion: support needs.
  • Empowerment and Engagement: Teenagers interact with the civil and political environment of their city, proposing architectural improvements to our School and problems on the way to the city center to people with disabilities.
