1st Junior High School of Kalambaka
School 8 membersThe 1st High School of Kalampaka is one of the two secondary schools in the area. 220 Greek and immigrant students aged 13-15 attend it and are taught various subjects as part of the compulsory curriculum. Emphasis is placed on ICT, Foreign Languages (English, French, German), Maths, Sciences, Greek and the development of social skills, active citizenship, initiative and cultural knowledge. Ss with learning difficulties (e.g. dyslexia) are integrated in the classes with the other Ss and are taught by specialized Ts working in the class along with the regular teacher.
The teaching staff comprise 30 teachers almost one quarter of whom hold a Master’s degree, speak at least 1 foreign language fluently and are computer literate as ICT is a vital part of the teaching process. Knowing the importance of learner involvement in school projects, they organise environmental, cultural, health education and professional guidance programs and support innovative actions. Those involved have experience in designing, organising, implementing and disseminating European projects giving a European dimension to the school while paving the way for more future projects and supporting international networking. They always share their European experiences with other members of the educational community motivating them to participate as well.
Living in the rural area of Kalampaka plain or the mountainous area in the north-west of the town, most students come from a deprived background and are not given many opportunities for a broad education. So their self-esteem is low and feelings of distress discourage them from taking steps to improve their self-awareness. Participation in the OSOS communities will help them enhance their social, mental, physical and emotional competences and academic skills.
