The Democratic Culture of CERN

Hosted by OSOS , contributed by 2dim-meion-komot on 27 May 2019

This project's aim is to inspire young children about Science, STEM Careers, Ethics and Democracy based on CERN, its Mission, its accomplishments, its contribution to the world and its Democratic Culture.

Methodology:
Inquiry based learning, interdisciplinary approach, teamwork

Procedure:

  • Inquire about CERN & learn about CERN, its Mission, its accomplishments, its contribution to society and its people.
  • Students will become journalists under the guidance of their teachers and write in teams short articles about CERN and its Democratic Coulture.
  • Students will become translators under the guidance of their teachers and in teams translate articles  in Greek, English and Turkish.
  • Our challenge is to make collaboratively a booklet about The Democratic Coulture of CERN
  • We are going to tweet about it with the hashtag #the_Democratic_Culture_of CERN
  • Implement activities inspired by "Playing with Protons", suggested by Tina Nantsou Physicist, resource  http://tinanantsou.blogspot.com/
  • Get creative and express ourselves

Learning Objectives
Inquiring in teams & learning about CERN, its Mission, its accomplishments, its contribution to the world, and its Democratic Culture. Getting inspired about Science, STEM Careers, Ethics and Democracy.

Democratic laws and institutions can only function effectively when they are based on a culture of democracy. For this, education is key. These were the conclusions of the Council of Europe’s Third Summit of Heads of State and Government held in Warsaw in 2005.

  • Democracy, as it is commonly interpreted, means a form of governance by or on behalf of the people.
  • However, while democracy cannot exist without democratic institutions and laws, these institutions themselves cannot function unless citizens practise a culture of democracy and hold democratic values and attitudes.
  • In culturally diverse societies, democratic processes and institutions require intercultural dialogue.
  • Intercultural dialogue requires respect for the dignity, the equality and the human rights of other people. It also requires critical reflection on the relationship between the cultural groups to which those involved in the intercultural dialogue belong, and respect for the cultural affiliations of others. In order to participate in intercultural dialogue, citizens require intercultural competence, and respect is a vital component of that competence.

Can we draw inspiration about a Democratic Culture and an Intercultural Dialogue from CERN?

Action 1: Students inquired in the classroom about CERN in teams. The inquiry was guided by the teachers. They took notes for their articles in their creative notebooks. They presented what they had found out in the classroom. We reflected on it.

Action 2: Komotini is a multicultural and multilingual city. Our school is a Minority Primary School. We are going to work on developing a network of students and schools that enhances collaborations and teamwork. Together we are going to get inspired by the "Democratic Culture of CERN" and inspire our community.

Action 3: Students will become journalists under the guidance of their teachers and write in teams short articles about CERN and its Democratic Culture.

Αction1: We shared our project with our school, our paretnts, other schools and our community by creating a webpage and publishing it. Here is the link:

2nd Minority Primary School of Komotini: Last school year after having worked on space related projects for 2 years we decided to make a planetarium out of paper and wooden skeleton with the 6th graders. It can host around 30 students. We set it up in the 4th Gymnasium last June  and during "Space Week" in 2018. Around 600 students have visited it until now.

Αction 2: This year it was set up again during the city's festival. Here you can see the program it is part of "Elftheria Thrakis". We had "Our Planetarium" set up again on the 6th of May in the Minority High school of Komotini as part of the city’s festival. Presentations were given (for a time period of 2 weeks) to the students  of the hosting school (around 800 students) during school hours. On 6th, 7th and 8th May 2019 and in the evenings the school opened its doors and welcomed families of our community (270 parents and children).
