Mapping flooded area using radar satellite remote sensing

A case study of flooding in Germany July 2021.

In this practical exercise, students will process radar satellite imagery data from Sentinel-1 mission to map flooded area in Germany July 2021. They will learn to process radar images using the free and open-sources Sentinel processing software SNAP, and do simple visualisation and overlays using OpenStreet Map and QGIS. Tasks include the extraction of water surface areas and identification of flooded areas. 

Suggestions for 3 lessons, 45 minutes each, suitable for students 15-18 years old.
