Escola Secundária Jerónimo Emiliano de Andrade (ESJEA) is renowned public school created in 1844 that is located in the city historic center of Angra do Heroísmo, that’s UNESCO world heritage site, so it is member of UNESCO Associated Schools Network.

There are around 1000 students enrolled, from 7th to 12th grade and vocational courses, with an age range from 12 to 18 years old and also adults (at night and in jail) that besides their regular classes in one of the ICT equipped classrooms with smartboard and wi-fi, can also attend classes laboratories and develop their skills in Biology, Physics and Chemistry; it also has indoor and outdoor sports facilities. ESJEA has been the choice for students that have immigrated to our island. Our Curriculum offers classes of Portuguese as a Second Language for students who don’t know the language or aren’t very comfortable in using it. This school has welcomed immigrants from Eastern Europe and from African former Portuguese colonies. In the past years, many of the locals who had emigrated to the USA and Canada have returned home and enrolled their children at ESJEA. There are also students with special needs included in regular classes which are helped by a special needs teacher and they also attend individual tutoring classes.

More than 100 experienced teachers with education degrees, mainly in permanent positions, have contributed to the participation in eTwinning projects, Comenius, Youth in Action and ERASMUS+ partnerships, and extracurricular activities that encourages students to become environmentally responsible, promoting active citizenship and gender equality, preventing discrimination amongst teenagers and bullying, raising interest for science, cinema, sports and nature, such as Jeus des Illes, Eco-Schools, Youth Parliament and Euroscola.
