Algemeen bijzonder
De Werf is een algemeen bijzondere basisschool. Algemeen geeft aan dat de school geen religieuze, maar een algemene, in ons geval pedagogische grondslag heeft. Bijzonder wil zeggen dat de school vanwege deze grondslag een eigen bestuur heeft en niet onder bestuur van de gemeente valt. De school wordt namelijk bestuurd door de Schoolvereniging voor Onderwijs op Grondslag van Vrije Persoonlijkheidsvorming.

De schoolvlag
De schoolvlag, een T-figuur in een cirkel, symboliseert de filosofie van dr. Schoenmaekers, die ten grondslag ligt aan het persoonlijkheidsonderwijs: de filosofie van de tegendelige houding. In deze filosofie kent de letter T, de Tau-figuur genoemd, een horizontale en een verticale lijn. Deze lijnen staan met elkaar in verbinding en vormen zo elkaars aanvullende tegendelen. Beide hebben elkaar nodig om de letter te kunnen vormen. Zo is het ook op school. Leerkrachten en kinderen hebben elkaar nodig om te kunnen functioneren, maar ieder heeft zijn specifieke rol. De verticale lijn in de letter staat voor actief, scheppend; de horizontale lijn staat voor passief, ontvangend. Op school vertegenwoordigt de leerkracht vaak de verticale lijn en het kind de horizontale lijn. De leerkracht schept de sfeer en de voorwaarden zodat de kinderen zich kunnen ontwikkelen. De tegendelige verhouding is echter ook omkeerbaar. De leerkracht moet soms ‘passief’ zijn en kinderen observeren om met hun aanleg bekend te worden. Kinderen moeten de kans krijgen creatief en onderzoekend te zijn, verticaal dus. Ook bij de begrippen vrijheid en verantwoordelijkheid is er duidelijk sprake van tegendelige verhoudingen. Als we vrijheid op de horizontale lijn plaatsen, dan zal deze op de verticale lijn doorkruist moeten worden door verantwoordelijkheid om evenwicht te krijgen. Vrijheid wordt begrensd door verantwoordelijkheid, maar dit geldt ook omgekeerd: om verantwoordelijkheid te kunnen dragen is vrijheid nodig. De eenheid, het samenspel tussen leerkrachten en kinderen, maar ook tussen kinderen onderling, wordt in de cirkelfiguur uitgedrukt.

Generally special
De Werf is a 'general special' elementary school. General indicates that the school follows no specific religion, but a general, in our case pedagogical basis. Special means that because of this foundation the school has its own board and does not fall under the board of the municipality. The school is in fact managed by the School Association for Education on the Basis of Free Personality Formation.

The school flag
The school flag, a T-figure in a circle, symbolizes the philosophy of Dr. Schoenmaekers, which underlies the personality education: the philosophy of the opposing attitude. In this philosophy, the letter T, called the Tau figure, has a horizontal and a vertical line. These lines communicate with each other and thus form each other's additional counterparts. Both need each other to form the letter. That is how it is at school. Teachers and children need each other to function, but each has its specific role. The vertical line in the letter represents active, creative; the horizontal line represents passive, receiving. At school, the teacher often represents the vertical line and the child the horizontal line. The teacher creates the atmosphere and conditions so that the children can develop. However, the adverse relationship is also reversible. The teacher must sometimes be 'passive' and observe children to become familiar with their aptitude. Children must be given the opportunity to be creative and researching, ie vertically. Also in terms of freedom and responsibility there is clearly a conflicting relationship. If we place freedom on the horizontal line, it will have to be traversed on the vertical line through responsibility to achieve balance. Freedom is limited by responsibility, but this also applies in reverse: to be able to take responsibility, freedom is necessary. The unity, the interplay between teachers and children, but also between children, is expressed in the circle figure.
