2nd Primary School of Voutes (Heraklion)

The 2nd Primary School of Voutes is located on the outskirts of the city of Heraklion. It is a relatively large school with 350  pupils and a steadily growth of the population of pupils in the school in the past decade.

The school has an ICT and physics laboratory and educational robotics equipment. Over the last three years, the school has focused on the development of interdisciplinary, inquiry based STEM activities using every day materials, 3D printing and physical computing focused on understanding physics concepts and the development of pupils' computational thinking.   

Our pupils have participated and presented their work at science and digital creativity festivals and at STEM competitions.  At the same time, they have participated in European projects such as the "Playing with Protons", "Creations" and "Teachers4Europe".  The participation in these projects, have increased our pupils’ interest and awareness in several issues and their investigative and social skills.  In addition, programming automation and robotic structures has created a new learning environment, leading to the development of high-level knowledge processes.

Our school has developed a culture of collaboration between its teachers and teachers of other schools to engage in innovative actions and develop high-level skills for our students.  In the past three years, has been the coordinating school for the implementation of the “Playing with Protons” program in Eastern Crete, with the participation of up to 9 schools, 14 teachers and more than 400 students (More information is available at http://silfot.wixsite.com/playingwithprotons).
