Finding technological solutions inspired by nature for people with special needs
The students will meet people with special needs (disabilities) from their community, learn about their daily life and together they will find a problem they wish to solve. During the project the students will be exposed to the field of Biomimicry through a visit to the local petting zoo and through lectures and activities given by experts and teachers. The students will work in groups to plan and design a product according to the engineering design process. The product that will be developed will solve the special needs people's problem and will be inspired by nature. The final products will be presented to the community during a pick event with all the people that were involved in the project and other representatives from the municipality and from the Ministry of Education.

Responsible Research and Innovation

Governance |
Students will take advantage of the knowledge of the stakeholders involved to solve social challenges in its environment, through knowledge and new techniques. In addition, they will be in contact with them to solve new and unexpected challenges that may arise, fostering a transparent and reflective collaboration.
I.e.: Students will be able to work on social challenges together with the support of stakeholders, with whom they will be in contact in a transparent manner and with the objective of improving the results of the project. |

Public engagement |
Students will involve several stakeholders who may be interested in the topic raised by this project, and whose knowledge and experience will be taken into account when advancing in the different phases of the activity.
I.e.: students will involve biomimicry experts from whom they will learn the basics of this science and those who will be involved as facilitators in different phases of the practice; they can also count on the testimony of people with special needs to know first-hand the challenges that they will later be able to solve. |

Gender equality |
Students will promote research teams with gender equality, as well as the challenges can be used from a gender equality point of view.
I.e.: students will work in teams with gender equality, and will generate ideas and solutions through biomimicry to problems for both men and women. |

Science Education |
Students will investigate the field of science in order to solve problems that exist in their environment, and will promote the participation of the environment in finding these solutions.
I.e.: the main theme of this Accelerator is to solve a social problem that affects people with special needs, through Science, and more specifically through biomimicry. |

Ethics |
Students will reflect on the needs of people in their environment, specifically those with special needs, and will study how to solve their problems through a scientific research and innovation approach.
I.e.: after interviewing people with special needs, students will be aware of their problems and will be able to reflect on their ideas and concerns. Later, students can use biomimicry to improve a part of the society of their environment. |

Open Access |
Students can consult literature reviewed by experts to know the state of the art of science, and what are the latest developments in the issues raised by this Accelerator.
I.e.: students will study how companies and associations are using biomimicry in their newest products, and they will take advantage of this knowledge to translate it into the results of their project. They can also share the materials created in the course of the project through the Internet, so that they can be consulted by any interested person. |
RESOURCES NEEDED:
The school will need help in finding academy experts in the Biomimicry and engineering fields. The school will also require money for students' travels. The school will also need some equipment for building the products, some of it will be provided by the local science center.

אנחנו רצינו למצוא פיתרון מהטבע

במסגרת לימודי המדעים למדנו על תחום שנקרא ביומימיקרי - מציאת פיתרון לבעיות מהטבע.
ישנו סוג של סרטן אשר חי באזורי מים מתוקים דלי סידן אך למרות זאת הוא מצליח להצמיח שלד חיצוני חזק המגן עליו מפני טורפים .
הסרטן בעצם בולע את השלד של עצמו, מעכל אותו ומעבד אותו בספיגה יעילה, עד כדי כך שהסידן זמין לו לשימוש חוזר תוך יומיים-שלושה. עיכול סידן באופן שיהיה זמין לשימוש, הוא בעיה לא רק של בני האדם, אלא גם של רוב החיות. והנה מצא הסרטן הכחול פתרון לבעיה.
סרטן זה נקרא הסרטן הכחול האוסטרלי והוא זה שיעזור לנו עם מחלת הפרכת

אנו חשבנו שניתן ליצור במעבדה חומר המעתיק את תאי הסידן האמורפי של הסרטן הכחול ולרכז אותם ככל האפשר לתרופה נוזלית ויעילה יותר לחולי הפרכת עצמות ושהחולים יוכלו להזריק את התרופה למח העצם וכמו הסרטן יוכלו לגדל תאים שאוגרים סידן לבניית העצמות.
אין לנו בתור תלמידים את היכולת והידע המתאימים עדיין - אך היינו צריכים לחשוב על רעיון יצירתי לבעיה קיימת.
