Eats Shoots of Peas.

Hosted by OSOS , contributed by mdunne on 22 January 2019

Our "Eats Shoots of Peas" campagin encourages our school community located in the subarbs of our capital city Dublin, to become more conscious of their role in developing a culture of sustainability amongst their peers and parents/guardians. The is directly linked to the UNESCO Sustainable Development Goal  No. 11 - Sustainable Cities and Communites.

Secondly the Eats Shoots of  Peas" campaign promotes personal stewardship of the environment by getting students growing dried peas. Everyone can garden in a small space such as a pot on a windosill or a pot on a veranda/ balcony of an appartment. Dried peas known as marrowfat peas are inexpensive and readily available in supermarkets. They take a short period of time to grow but must be tended to by students. This demonstates that care, patience and attention can yield success in gardening. Pea shoots can then be served as a garnish on foods or incorporated in their diet to increase nutritional content of diet. Growing plants takes patience, thougtfullness and care and may not always yield success but this teaches personal resilience. This augments awareness of Sustainable Development Goal No. 3 - Good Health and Wellbeing.

Lastly the campaign demonstrates that planting mediums should not be peat based i.e "peat free"so as to preserve our disappearing bogs. The plant growth medium can have waste coffee grounds included sourced from local cafes. The growing pot for dried peas does not have to be purchased. Consider what pot found in the kitchen can be removed from the waste stream and put to an alternative use. e.g 500 ml yoghurt pot with holes drilled for drainage.
