Which natural hazards could damage the area where you live?Which natural hazards could damage the area where you live?Which natural hazards could damage the area where you live?

Most of people on Earth live in areas with increased possibility of natural hazards. People have learned to live with earthquakes, landslides, floods, hurricanes, volcanic eruptions etc. Through this project we would like to identify possible natural hazards in the area we live in, to become aware of the danger we are exposed to, to get to know how to behave in such situations (both before and after they occur).

Another aim of this project is to warn the community about the danger of natural hazard and to explain how we can protect ourselves. The project involves the active participation of all the students and teachers in Colti Secondary School, their families, the community and local authorities. All the activities are carried out in partnership with the National Institute for Earth Physics (NIEP)

Learning Objectives:

Pupils can:

  • identify the main natural hazards from Colti area
  • become aware of possible natural hazards in their own home region
  • avoid the main immediate dangers (such as falling buildings, avoiding areas where there are landslides)
  • simulate an earthquake through an experiment created by themselves
  • use the world map of earthquakes (https://shakenet.raspberryshake.org/sa )
  • disseminate the information to the community

Learning Objectives
Mathematics, Physics , Science, Technology, Research

Guidelines

Natural hazards are harmful and often cause damage that can be felt for years. However, hazards are proof that our planet is alive and still has the capacity to host and support life. We need to respect and understand them so that we could protect ourselves from them.

This project is important so that students could understand the consequences of natural hazards from the area (landslides/earthquakes), to participate in different types of activities, find solutions to reduce their effects and disseminate the information to their families, local people, local authorities.

In this respect, the students in our school were put in different learning situations:

  • They identified natural hazards that affected the community in the past
  • They identified, with the help of Google Maps, possible areas where these events could occur (LFE equipment)
  • They actively participated in two activities organized by the National Institute of Reserach and Development for Earth Physics
  • They participated in experiments to understand earthquakes
  • They made two trips to areas affected by earthquakes and landslides (the first to identify the studied areas, the second to communicate our conclusions to the villagers) They listened to elders talking about these unwanted events
  • They participated in the installation of a seismograph in their school
  • They discovered the applications of observing the seismographs network that has been installed in Romania and around the world.  (https://shakenet.raspberryshake.org/sa )
  • They disseminated the project to the local community (They disseminated the project in the local community (we had a working visit to the Colți City Hall, we talked with the affected people, we conveyed our conclusions to the students' families, we created and distributed the stages of the project on YouTube)
  • Field trip

Partnership opportunities
  • Activities and projects provide a great opportunity to transfer knowledge from school to the local community. Students can organize, at the end of next school year, a final event in which they can present the stages and the activities carried out in the project.
  • The local administration, NGOs, local community can collaborate better to manage the effects of natural hazards identified in the area.
  • Students can discuss with local people about the impact that natural hazards have had on them, the way they reacted and how they can react now.
  • The organization of trips in the areas affected by earthquakes, landslides and the invitation of specialists in order to explain the phenomena.

Guidelines

Work stages of the project:

  • Identification on google maps of the areas affected by hazards.

  • Identification on google maps of the areas affected by hazards

  • The visit to the field where the hazards have affected the life of the local people.

  • We received the visit of the National Institute of Reserach and Development for Earth Physics. They explained to us the phenomena that caused these tragedies. I learned through interactive presentations and about earthquakes and landslides.

  • During this time, the team from the National Institute of Research and Development for Earth Physics installed our smart boards and the seismometer. These were a real help in our research. We discovered the applications of observing the seismographs network that has been installed in Romania and around the world.  We even created our own seismograph :).

  • I completed the study and introduced it in an objective presentation in which I have the way we have to live with these challenges of nature - NATURAL HAZARDS!

the study

  • At the end of the project, we disseminated our study to the community: we entered the community and explained our findings to the residents. I was also received by the mayor and deputy mayor where we discussed hazards and how the community can work together to reduce their effects.

Guidelines

  1. The students created their own study regarding the hazards in Colti Commune. They used Lfe equipment in its creation (identification on Google Maps of the targeted areas, observation of the world map of earthquakes, realization of the Power Point presentation, etc.).

  2. They created their own seismometer from recyclable cardboard, which they presented to the families.

  3. They wrote poems about the danger of hazards, the poems will be presented to the community at the end of the school year meeting.
