Title: PUP – Pick Up After Your Pet

Description: Dog fouling is a major issue in our local community. This project would be community led to reduce dog fouling and bring multiple benefits.

Learning Objectives
To become aware of ways in which the environment can be polluted or harmed. Identify, discuss and implement simple strategies for improving and caring for the environment  realise that there is both an individual and a community responsibility.

Guidelines

  • In this stage, students take the initiative to identify problems in their local communities.
  • Dog fouling is a huge issue in our local area. When we go outside the school building we have to avoid dog waste everywhere.
  • We find dog poop everywhere; footpaths, the park and even the playground.
  • Not only is it disgusting to see, it is a danger to our health and stops us from enjoying our local environment.

Partnership opportunities

Local Council, local politicians, community clean up groups.

We form a cluster with the other schools in our local area

Local business sponsorship (pet stores etc) of competition prizes

Guidelines

In this stage, students envision and develop creative solutions that can be replicated easily, reach the maximum number of people, generate long-lasting change, and make a quick impact.

Identify “Dog Fouling Blackspots” in the local environment through data gathering. This will involve using mobile devices where students will mark a digital map of the area based on the highest amount of dog fouling.

Children will photograph any dog waste they identify. Google will record the Geolocation data through Google Photos. Children use the data to create a heatmap of dog fouling blackspots in the area.

Raise awareness through art projects and social media. Encourage children to educate family members and friends on dog fouling and arm them with facts.

Monitor impact of campaign on the levels of dog fouling and provide updates over a number of months.

Description

We found that the area near the park gate was the worst spot near the school. We have saved all this data in an excel spreadsheet and have used google maps to mark the worst area

Guidelines

Children will discuss and research the area of dog fouling.

Using mobile devices groups will measure where the highest levels of dog fouling occurs in the local area.

An art competition will be held in school based on the theme of dog fouling. This will be promoted on the schools social media channels.

This will be a school wide project. Different class levels will approach it differently - each level taking on an appropriate activity. Older classes will make videos.

We will 3D Print poop bag holders and attach them underneath the posters in the blackspots (PLEASE TAKE ONE)

Posters will be printed professionally and displayed in the area to remind people of their responsibility as dog owners.

Groups will continually measure levels of dog fouling in areas to gauge impact of campaign

Social and local media will be used to regularly report ongoing levels of dog fouling.
