Art, Language, and Coding with Fernando Botero

Hosted by OSOS , contributed by CSChristiana on 15 November 2023

This project is designed for primary students to explore the intersection of art, language, and coding while integrating Fernando Botero's artwork and virtual environments. The main objectives are for students to understand Botero's art, its characteristics, and create their own art inspired by Botero's style, as well as to introduce basic programming concepts using the CoSpaces app to design a virtual exhibition of Botero's paintings. It  offers a comprehensive approach to merging art, language, coding, and virtual environments, aiming to foster creativity, critical thinking, and practical skills among primary students through hands-on activities and technology integration.

For this lesson the cooperative approach and the problem-based method will be used, combined with direct teaching method in activities where the teacher will provide instructions and guidance, and students will actively participate in coding activities.

Learning Objectives
-Introduce primary students to the artwork of Fernando Botero- Students create their own art work inspired by his style- Use basic programming concepts to create a virtual tour of an art exhibition featuring Fernando Botero's paintings in CoSpaces app

Guidelines

The problem:  The students to find an interesting and creative way to share with their parents or others what they learned about Botero's biography and distinctive style, the imaginative stories they wrote about some of the painter's artworks, as well as the most significant works of art by the artist.

Description

"When our teacher asked us to think of a way to share what we learned about Botero with our parents and friends, at first, we thought of doing a PowerPoint presentation. Then, she showed us CoSpaces, and it seemed nicer to us. We could create something like a little movie with moving designs."

Guidelines

1.  Introducing Fernando Botero (students search for his biography on internet).

2.  Images of Botero's artwork projected on the interactive flat panel.  Engaging  students by asking questions about what they notice in Botero's paintings. Encouraging them to describe the shapes, colors, and emotions depicted in the artworks.  Explaining that Fernando Botero is known for his unique style of painting figures that appear chubby or plump. Then dscussing how his art often exaggerates the size and proportions of people and objects.

3.  Providing each student with drawing paper and art supplies.   Instructing them to choose a subject (person, animal, or object) and create their own artwork inspired by Botero's style. Encouraging them to exaggerate the size or proportions of their chosen subject.  Moving around offering guidance and encouragement, and ask students about their creative choices and ideas.

4.  Gathering students together to share and discuss their artworks and encourage them to explain their choices and what they enjoyed about the activity.

5.   Discussion on the connection between art and storytelling.  Students write an imaginary story about a Botero's art work and then share it with the class.

6. Students introduced with a "problem":  They should find a way to create a virtual tour in an art exhibition with Botero’s art, which can be shared with other students in school and with their parents.

7.  Introduction to the CoSpaces app and its features for creating virtual environments.  Brief overview of basic programming concepts, explaining terms like variables, loops, and conditionals. Brief explanation of the basics of using CoSpaces for coding.

8. Coding Virtual Tour Activity:  Students work in pairs and they use the CoSpaces app to create a virtual tour of an art exhibition featuring Botero's paintings.  They incorporate their imaginary stories they wrote in language lesson at the dialogues their main characters have during their visit at the exhibition.  They also use the biography of Botero they wrote and some key aspects of his work they learned in Art lessons.  Students encouraged to incorporate basic programming concepts they learned in the previous coding lessons.

9.  Virtual Tour Presentation: Students present their virtual tours to the class.  They also discuss how they incorporated Botero's style, coding concepts, and the storytelling element into their virtual exhibitions.

10.  Discussion and Reflection: Class discussion on the unique aspects of creating a virtual tour. Students are asked to reflect on the challenges and benefits of using coding to enhance an art-related project (self evaluation).  A peer evaluation on others work is also encouraged.

Description

Μ1: "The whole project was very enjoyable. Botero's paintings seemed very funny to us. We liked that we made paintings that looked like his."

Μ2: "I really liked Co Spaces. Since I knew how to work in Scratch, it didn't seem too difficult to me. We had to make several changes until we finally created what we wanted in the end. We were experimenting and altering the code until we created something nice. It was a very fun lesson."

"We had fun creating imaginary stories about Botero's paintings"

"We created a virtual tour to an exhibition of Botero's art. It was a playful, creative, engaging activity.  We think the result is very good.  We are proud of it.

We created paintings like Botero:

Description

"We shared our drawings and the virtual art exhibition we created to our parents, and they were thrilled. We also sent it to some of our cousins and friends who live far away. They want to learn how to create virtual stories like that too."
