SEISMO-LAB Summer School 2023

seismolab

2-7 July 2023

The participants of the SEISMO-LAB Summer School 2023 will have the opportunity to get familiarized with the ways the Schools Study Earthquakes Network can be exploited in order to serve educational purposes. During the first part, very detailed guidelines for the use of the data obtained from the instruments will be presented. Later, participants will be presented to activities that can very easily implemented in real life conditions and can ideally be included in their routines, e.g. “How to find the Epicenter of an Earthquake”.

Furthermore, the participants will be informed about the Automatic Solutions system which automatically receives data from the installed seismometers of the Schools Study Earthquakes Network and displays them in the map, showing all the important parameters of the occurred earthquake and enabling users to download directly from there the related seismic waveform.

Through the Schools SEISMO-LAB Summer School 2023, teachers will also learn to develop educational projects that are proposing solutions to the needs and challenges of their local communities. At this session, the interest will shift to the citizen science angle behind the network and in the ways, it can work for the society’s interest. The role of students and teachers acting as citizen scientists generating open research data in cooperation with scientists from the field of seismology and the big data will be highlighted. Moreover, participants will be presented educational content, which they can use in class using data from the network. Through such an activity the data provided by the network will return to the community a product that could be essential in case of an earthquake.
