GSO 2019 - Gravity - Greek Scene
Community 1 memberGreek Scene contribution at the Global Science Opera 2019
Ellinogermaniki Agogi 1st grade High School
Link: https://globalscienceopera.com/productions/gravity-2019/
Teachers: Petros Stergiopoulos (Music Production), Maria Bilika (Music/ Drama), Manolis Chaniotakis (Physics)
Scene Duration: 120 seconds (max).
Scientific theme:
The eclipse of the Sun observed from Principe Island in May 1919 the observation of which proved Einstein's theory.
Performative act:
The curvature of light observed during this eclipse as seen on Earth. The light emitted as a speckle on Earth by the "Hyades" stars shifts as their light beam bends due to the Sun's gravity, and this observation on Earth is only possible during the solar eclipse phenomenon.
Static scene / Drama representation idea:
The Yades stars take the role of the light ray forming a human chain that curves (when the eclipse occurs).
Music:

Patterns that will result from the sound recording of data from the original study of the scientists who observed the 1919 eclipse. The patterns will be recorded individually or in separate groups. A background will be recorded to support the students' music.
The table below refers to the determination of the deflection of light caused by the sun's gravitational field.

In the image below, the left column is the number of the star and the adjacent columns show the fixation of the star's position on the x and y axes.

Points of reference in a scale can be defined in the following table :

Each student identified a pitch and a note according to the vertical axis of the table (as shown in the picture below) that we will print so that students can give the position of each star.

DESIGN THINKING LESSON-PLAN
The above practice has been documented as a SoundScapes lesson-plan in the SOUNDSCAPES Community post here: https://soundscapes.nuclio.org/index.php/community/sonification-in-steam-share-resources/gso-2019-sonification-in-the-greek-scene-example/
USA-GREECE-CHILE 2019
The collaboration between Ellinogermaniki Agogi (Petros Stergiopoulos, GR), Carl Pennypacker (USA), and the University of Antofagasta (Myrta Fatima, CL) continued in 2019 for a third year. A summary of the result is in the following link: http://connect.ea.gr/gso2019/output/gso2019-usa-chile_b.mp3 and it will be documented in a separate page.
