Geographic Information System (OSOS Summer School 2019 Workshop)
Community 2 membersThe historical paths become path of knowledge. An innovative approach via geographic information system (GIS)
In recent years, the use of the science of Geoinformatics has become more and more intense. In our everyday life in the world of technology, we come into contact with geo-information, whose understanding is very important for making decisions and solving a problem. Geo-information technologies also include Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are a tool of Geoinformatics as they combine both descriptive information and spatial information into a computational system. The incorporation of new technologies at every stage of the educational process is a prerequisite for developing students' creative and critical thinking and providing them with the skills to manage, process and distribute knowledge and information throughout their lives.
The aim of the Workshop during the OSOS Summer School is to understand trainees such as Geoinformatics and one of its scientific disciplines of Geographic Information Systems (GIS). The combination of GIS science with education will be realized through case studies, such as the creation of a map of paths and historical points of the mountain in Google Earth, along with the necessary processing and management of geospatial data, the creation of an imprint project with learning and using GPS handhelds to collect map data in the field, and finally examples of using GIS in primary and secondary school classes.
The purpose of the training program is to train:
Knowledge level:
• Understand the concept of Geoinformatics
• Understand what is a Geographic Information System (GIS)
• Understand how the Geographic Information System (GIS) software can be entered and used in school
Skills and competencies:
• Familiarize yourself with Geographic Information Systems software (GIS)
• Understand and apply the use of geospatial information
• Use creation tools on an educational map
In terms of values:
• To acquire a culture of the concept of geoinformatics
• Obtaining a culture of geographic information systems (GIS), a growing technological sector and education.
Athanasios G. Dimou, studied at the Technological Educational Institute of Serres, in the department of Geoinformatics and Surveying (2007) and then he continued with the Master of Science in Geography and Applied Geoinformatics in stream of Geoinformatics (2013), in the Harokopeio University. Moreover, he acquired the Pedagogical sufficiency at the School of Pedagogical and Technological Education (2016) and he continued with a second Master of Science in The Greek-French Master Programme "Spatial Dynamics and Rural Planning" (DYNTAR, 2017), in the University of Thessaly, School of Engineering.
From 2009, his is working as a freelance Engineer and he also had worked like a teacher in the field of Informatics and Computers, in the continuing education for all ages. Nowadays he is working in an administrative government hospital as IT computer Science.
His scientific frames are in the fields of Geoinformatics (GIS, geodesy, Survey, UAV, Remote Sensing and Photogrammetry, Computer Science and teaching, mapping, cultural heritage).
He has many participations as a speaker at national conferences and workshops with various themes.
He has been awarded with the four-member team PROMETHEUS, in the annual competition of NASA Space Apps 2017.
He was the President of the Panhellenic Association of Graduate Engineers of Geoinformatics and Surveyors in the years 2015-2017 and also he is nowdays President for the years 2019-2021. Member to several scientific and NGOs.
