Community 3 membersDer griechische Mathematiker Eratosthenes (276-194 vor Chr.) konnte mit einfachen Beobachtung die Kugelform der Erde zeigen und mit Hilfe eines simplen Experiments sogar ihren Umfang berechnen. Bereits letztes Jahr (2014) nahmen weltweit 350 Schulen aus 37 Ländern am Eratosthenes Experiment teil!
Auch dieses Jahr sind Schulen wieder dazu eingeladen, eine inspirierende naturwissenschaftliche Erfahrung zu machen, indem sie den Erdumfang unter Zuhilfenahme von eLearning und einfachen Hilfsmitteln experimentell herausfinden.
Das Experiment wird am Montag, den 22-23 Sptember 2015 stattfinden!

Guidelines for participation
STEPS TO FOLLOW
- Find the time of your local noon at your location. Pleaseuse the web-based Solar Calculator or the Stellarium software (A short guide for using theStellarium software to calculate your local noon at your location can be found here).

Take a one-meter stick (H= 1 meter, see figure below) and place it vertically to the ground. Ask your students to measure the lengthofthestickto make sure it is one meter long.

At the time scheduled to conduct the experiment, ask your students to measure the length of the stick’s shadow (length S in the figure below). Repeat the measurement 5 times and write their values down in the form found in the Submit Your Data area in the website (this area will be activated on the day of the Eratosthenes Experiment, 19/03/2015).

Provide to the students thevalue for length (L)ofthethirdsideofthetriangleinthepicturebelow or ask them to calculate it themselves by using the Pythagorean Theorem (L2=S2+H2). Write the value in your notebook.

Calculate the distance using Google Maps between your school and the school you have matched up with. (A short guide on how to perform the measurement can be found here). Provide the students withthevalueofthis distance between the two schools. Write the value in your notebook.
The experiment will take place on the 23rd of September. For your matchup –if no other schools can be found on the same longitude- you can consider the existence of a virtual school on the equator with experimental data 0 (shade of a one-meter stick measured at a certain time). This way you can also have an accurate outcome by conducting the experiment by yourself.
Please keep in mind that we will provide you with a list of schools (and their contact persons) that are located at a longitude very close to that of your school.
Ask your students to calculate the circumference of the Earth and submit your value in the Submit Your Data area

You have to give the questionnaire to the students before and after the implementation, so that we can see if and how much they learned.
Take a photo of the experiment or the work behind it or a creative snapshot of those involved in the experiment, submit it to the Eratosthenes Photo Competition and don’t miss the opportunity to travel to the 2016 Inspiring Science Education Summer Academy in Athens.
You may submit your photo by joining this community Eratosthenes Experiment 2015 and then clicking on the “Comment” tab in the “Discussion” with the title “Please submit your photo September 2015”. Offer a description by adding your country, your school’s name and your own name in the “Comment” area. “Select” your file, “Upload” it and then “Save”.
