Overcoming communication barriers for sustainable change

Hosted by , contributed by Kyriaki_Vakkou on 15 September 2023
Dimension:
Connection with local/regional stakeholders
Stakeholders involved:
Educational providers
Local authorities
Parents
Main challenge:

The main challenge that was addressed was the lack of communication with stakeholders due to poor technological equipment in two Greek schools (kindergarten and primary school).

Action and initiatives:

The school used the equipment funded by LFE, the schools managed to gather data for their school project regarding recycling and sanitary waste disposal sites and to communicate with the following stakeholders in order to arrange environmental actions on the topic of recycling: a) Environmental protection consultants of Metopi Organisation, b) the Municipality of Central Corfu and Diapontian Islands and c) the local Coast Guard of the island.

Firstly, the consultants of Metopi environmental organisation came to school and talked to the students about their contribution to the field of recycling. Secondly, the local authorities organised and presented not only to students but also to the local residents, a big preparedness exercise in the harbour of Ereikousa island, concerning the immediate response to sudden oil spill in the sea. They placed floating dams and sea cushions in the sea to contain the oil at the spill point, showing how a huge water pollution could be prevented. Finally, with the technological equipment the schools received, they organised teleconferences with the cleaning department of the municipality of Corfu, who informed the students of both schools about recycling and how different types of materials can be recycled. Students also managed to develop new educational material (presentations and games) through Scratch Junior for relevant concepts.

Main change/improvement/impact:

The impact to the students and the local society was great. After the communication and collaboration established between the school and the stakeholders mentioned above, they managed to organise a variety of environmental actions. Hence, students, teachers and the local residents developed new knowledge regarding the protection of the environment. Finally, students and teachers developed their digital and communication skills and the schools managed to expand their network of collaborations.
