Sighted children's learning is constantly reinforced by what they see around them (colours, shapes, objects in use at home, facial expressions, illustrations, digital images, animals, landscapes, skylines, architecture, transport and so on). Children with a vision impairment may have greatly reduced opportunities for incidental learning and the reinforcement of concepts and knowledge of the world around them. Some children with impaired vision may have gaps in their general knowledge and in their development of spatial, numerical and scientific concepts. Science education provides important opportunities to fill any gaps and extend a child's knowledge about the properties of objects and materials and their understanding of biological and mechanical processes.
Initially the concept of shadows appears to be difficult for students with visual impairment. However, it can be taught effectively if we involve actual experiences (experiential learning) where is possible.
