Our beautiful planet is constantly under transformation. Sometimes, changes occur over a very long period of time and we barely note them. Some other times however, transformations are the result of massive and devastating events. In this activity we explore some of Earth's most intense and overwhelming events; volcanic eruptions, earthquakes and tsunamis. We will reflect on the impact of these natural phenomena on humans and their societies.

Earthquakes for Junior High School Students
The "Earthquakes for Junior High School Students" Inquiry Learning Space introduces students to aspects of earthquakes. Students learn about the science behind earthquake generation and detection and investigate the Tectonic Plate Theory, by correlating its outcomes with the worldwide distribution of earthquakes in real time.

The School Study Earthquakes (SSE) project aims to increase students’ interest in scientific processes, influence their awareness of how earthquakes affect their life, as well as assisting them to develop key skills, such as analysis and problem solving skills through the study of seismology. Exploiting the innate curiosity of students about natural phenomena enables lifelong learning. In order to achieve this goal, teacher’s role is significant.

Διαδοχικές καταγραφές του σεισμού μεγέθους 5,9 R που έγινε στις 21/5 στα ανοιχτά της Πύλου (στο Φρέαρ των Οινουσσών) από τους σχολικούς σεισμογράφους του Δικτύου SNAC καθώς τα σεισμικά κύματα ταξιδεύουν Β, ΒΑ και Α όπως αναπτύσσεται το Δίκτυο. Στις διαδοχικές εικόνες παρουσιάζονται οι σταθμοί, οι καταγραφές και οι αποστάσεις στις οποίες βρίσκονται από το επίκεντρο του σεισμού.

The Sound of Earth: Implementation Guide
This activity combines scientific inquiry with music education. Students investigate the characteristics of earthquakes using real data and then sonify the data in order to produce a musical synthesis from them. Students are introduced to the sonification technique which can be applied in various physical phenomena spanning from elementary particle collisions to the study of exoplanets and beyond. |
